We call this wine earth because of the soil types that occur in this vineyard. The Paardeberg is usually associated with granite and here we find sandstone and quartz there, which is not common for this mountain.
It has a fresh, soft, smooth acidity, a slightly rich and rich fruitiness with minerals and a plump, slightly thick body. The center of gravity is slightly low and spreads downward. Just as the name suggests, it evokes images of “soil, stones, and earth”. In comparison, the company’s “Sky” gives a refreshing feeling of flying into the sky and a brightness like sky blue, while this “Earth” gives the impression of a downward direction spreading across the ground, and a dark color reminiscent of soil mixed with a little yellow and brown. It is also interesting to compare the differences in taste due to the differences in soil and fields. During a South African wine tour in February 2024, this wine was equally popular with the company’s “Sky” among participants.

André Bruyns, former assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie, is now vineyard manager at Swartland property Lammershoek (recently under new ownership). He did not release any wines form the 2021 vintage under his City on a Hill label due to difficult trading circumstances but he’s back with a bang with his 2022 new releases.
